Hadrian built his wall (Vallum Aelium) to preserve the boundaries of the Roman empire. The route of the wall passes close to the church building. The Roman empire has fallen but Christ’s kingdom is still advancing!
The wall was begun in AD122 and there is evidence for the presence of Christianity at Vindolanda and Housesteads forts.
The site of Carlisle castle has been in continuous military use since it was a Roman fort.
